Been currently engrossed reading Alexander Green’s Beyond Wealth: The Road Map to a Rich Life. It was part of a magazines must read list for 2011 so thought I’d grab a copy of it at Fully Booked. It’s not the type of book that you’d be able to read straight and not put it down. It’s a book that requires thought after reading. It requires you to absorb the things and the teachings it is putting forward. Been learning a lot though from it and it’s a book I’d definitely recommend for everyone to read.

One of the chapters of the book talks about the most important job on earth, the job of that of a parent. It puts forth a list of core values that the author thinks must be taught to all kids. Each one of us would have an opinion on the things that needed to be taught, hence, write it down in the comment so I can add it on. Sometimes, if you don’t write it down, you tend to forget about it. At least, if its written, its something that you can revisit and remind yourself.

1. Respect your elders
2. Two ears, one mouth: Listen twice as much as you talk.
3. When you give your word, keep it. Always.
4. Look people in the eye when you talk to them.
5. Stand up for yourself.
6. Smile – it doesn’t cost anything.
7. If you don’t have the time to do it right, how will you find the time to do it over?
8. Spend less than what you earn. Save and invest the difference.
9. Always say “please” and “thank you,” “yes sir,” and “no ma’am”
10. Understand that the workplace is a hierarchy, not a democracy.
11. If you borrow something, return it in better condition that you got it.
12. Learn to think for yourself.
13. If you don’t know something, look it up.
14. Cigarettes don’t make you cool. They make you look dumb.
15. Drugs deliver short-term highs and lifelong lows.
16. Sex is great, but unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases are not.
17. When you need help, ask for it. When others need help, give it.
18. Doing the right thing always has its reward.
19. If you mess up, apologize
20. Anything worth having is worth working for.
21. Do what you love and the money will follow.
22. You don’t need someone to complete you. Complete yourself.
23. Successful people make a habit of doing the things unsuccessful people don’t want to do.
24. Hold the door for people – men and women alike.
25. Accept responsibility for yourself.
26. If you face a difficult decision, ask “How will this make me feel about myself?”
27. And never forget: illegitimi non carborundum (That’s mock Latin for “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.”)
