Simple Eats: Mesa

I have been a bit on a backlog posting pictures of restaurants we’ve gone to for the past days. Last Saturday, we decided to try Mesa, along Tomas Morato. This restaurant came highly recommended by friends of mine who couldn’t stop raving at how good the food is and how affordable it is. So, we decided to try it out last Saturday. And, we brought the best critic in town – my dad.

I like the ambiance of the place – the cocoon like sofa seats and the enclosed lighting fixtures.

Warren taking in the new place –

For appetizers, my dad ordered this fish lumpia. I wasn’t too fond of this.

Fish Lumpia

This was the only dish that I didn’t like.

Baby Squid

My nanny found this a bit on the salty side. I thought it was comparable to Abe though Abe’s is still better.

Guava Sinigang na Baboy

This was soft and tender, good choice for beef lovers.

Beef Stew

This was equally tasty without being too salty.

Binagoongang Baboy

This is a winner. I loved the 4 sauces that came with it – their homemade soy sauce, fish sauce, bagoong and sweet and chili sauce.

Boneless Fish

Overall, I like the food at Mesa – Filipino food with a twist. The price is reasonable (spent around PHP2K for the above dishes) and the ambiance conducive.

Simple Eats: H Cuisine

We were prodded by the article written by Anton Diaz of Our Awesome Planet on H Cuisine. Being near my office, we decided to try this restaurant for lunch today. H Cuisine is located in between Rub and Tomassi. We arrived a wee bit early (10:30) and decided to wait till 11AM. However, when we called them up, we were informed that they open at 11:30AM so we decided to scout an area for a project and come back. Along the way, we saw my cousin, Dr. John Tan and decided to invite him for lunch.

H Cuisine is owned by Chef Hannah Herrera with her credentials and magazine articles highlighted on a wall. The restaurant has a homey feel to it. Interiors were cleverly designed in blue and white colors. It’s a restaurant that you wouldn’t feel awkward spending an afternoon in.

Pumpkin Soup (PHP108.00)
Soup for the day was pumpkin soup. Loved that there were bits and pieces of unsquashed pumpkin. Good starter for our lunch.

Teriyaki Glazed Milk Fish Belly (PHP198.00)
This is really good. The 3 pieces wasn’t enough for the 3 of us! It was sweet and tasty in the right places.

Eggplant Moussaka (PHP178.00)

Breaded Chicken Parmesan Rolls (PHP288.00)
This was definitely unseasoned. It came very bland. We had to request Knorr seasoning for it. This would have been nice if it was seasoned correctly. A dash of salt and pepper would have made this perfect. We ordered the one for sharing.

Most Awesome Angus Beef Belly (PHP428.00)
With a name like that and a tag line of the restaurant, we had to try their house specialty. We ordered the one for sharing. The beef was definitely delicious. It was soft and tasty. Definitely a must try!

We ended the wonderful pre-Birthday lunch with a blueberry cheesecake (PHP88.00).

Simple Eats: Kanzhu

Had lunch at Kanzhu today. Their best seller? Their hand-pulled noodles. Hence, we ordered their Beef and Tendon Noodle Soup, Beef Fried Noodles, Chinese Chorizo Fried Rice, Tomato egg and Pork and chives dumpling. Total bill was PHP640.00.

Beef Fried Noodles

Tomato and Egg

Beef and Tendon Noodle Soup

Chorizo Fried Rice

Pork and Chives Dumpling

I didn’t like my noodle soup as much. Loved the simplicity of the Tomato and Egg dish. It was a perfect complement to the Chorizo Fried rice. The pork and chives dumpling is also a winner.
